Trump moves to ban Technologies from Foreign Countries deemed ‘Security Threats’
President Donald Trump signed an executive order
Wednesday in a move to ban certain types of technologies from foreign countries
deemed a national security threat to the United States.
Foreign countries and entities are creating and
exploiting vulnerabilities in information and communications technology, Trump
noted in his order. These entities are producing such technologies to commit
malicious cyber-enabled actions, including certain kinds of espionage,
according to the order.
Trump “will do what it takes to keep America safe
and prosperous. and to protect America from foreign adversaries who are
actively and increasingly creating and exploiting vulnerabilities in
information and communications technology infrastructure and services in the
United States,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders wrote in a press
statement after the announcement.
The move is likely aimed at Chinese
telecommunications company Huawei, a giant entity the U.S. fears is conducting
espionage on behalf of the Beijing.
Reuters reported Tuesday that Trump was considering
signing an order designed to prohibit American companies from using
technologies from countries deemed adversaries. Huawei officials appeared to
support such an order, with Andy Purdy, the chief technology officer for Huawei
Technologies USA, telling reporters the company welcomes the president making
America safe.
The U.S. continues to apply pressure on Britain and
others to shy away from using Huawei to build out their fifth generation
network. Allowing the participation of Huawei in Germany’s 5G project would
mean the U.S. won’t be able to maintain the same level of cooperation with
Germany’s security agencies, U.S. Ambassador Richard Grenell said in March.
Trump, who has been engaged in a nearly two-year
long trade fight with Beijing, is pushing U.S. telecommunications companies to
blow past China.
“I want 5G, and even 6G, technology in the United
States as soon as possible. It is far more powerful, faster, and smarter than
the current standard,” the president told his Twitter followers in February.
His administration set Huawei directly in its
sights.
The Department of Justice charged the company in
January on several counts of fraud. The 13-count indictment against Huawei and
its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, accused the tech giant of bank
fraud, wire fraud, and violating U.S. sanctions on Iran. Huawei was also
charged with conspiring to obstruct justice related to the DOJ’s investigation.
U.S. lawmakers have gotten in on the fight as well.
Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, for instance,
announced legislation Tuesday that would make it more difficult for American
tech companies to export their technology to China.
“It’s time we realized China is not one threat among
many, China is the biggest national security threat facing the US,” Hawley
wrote in a tweet shortly after his announcement.
Gunmen abduct eight in Zamfara, demands whopping ransom of N50m
Eight persons have again been abducted in Kanoma
town of the Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State by unknown gunmen suspected
to be Fulani.
Narrating the incident, a resident of the town,
Alhaji Ibrahim Kanoma, said the bandits invaded the town around 1am on Monday
and shot sporadically to scare the inhabitants.
Ibrahim disclosed that the bandits abducted 24
persons but later released 16 of them “because they looked very wretched” and
went away with eight.
According to him, after several phone calls, the
bandits were demanding the sum of N50m before they could release the victims.
Confirming the incident to newsmen on the telephone, the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed
Shehu, said the victims were abducted in Kanoma town around 1am on Monday.
The PPRO said on hearing the attack, the command
mobilised a team of policemen to pursue the hoodlums in order to rescue the
victims.
Meanwhile, a prominent Islamic scholar, Sheik Ahmad
Umar Kanoma, has appealed to the relevant authorities to urgently do something
to rescue the victims. He also called on the government at all levels to find a
lasting solution to the security problem ravaging the state.
Kanoma, who spoke on banditry during the Ramadan
lecture, described the insecurity problem in the state as a “time bomb.”
He called on the Muslims to intensify prayers for
God’s intervention.
Election Losers Sponsoring Insecurity , Nigerian Army Chief alleges
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Yusuf Buratai, on
Wednesday said embittered politicians at the last polls are destabilizing the
country and making the country ungovernable with rising activities of bandits.
He, however, warned them to abide by the outcomes of
the elections and exercise restraints and allow peace to reign.
The Army chief pointed out that the military had
strong evidence against the politicians sponsoring banditry, kidnapping and
other forms of criminal acts.
He gave this assertion while hosting members of the
10-man Committee on Army of the House of Representatives, who were in Maiduguri
on a two-day oversight function.
He said, “There are myriads of security challenges
we are facing right now in the North-West, North-Central and other parts of the
country. I want to believe, and rightly so, that with the fallout of the
just-concluded general elections, there are politicians who saw their defeat as
a means of revenge, sponsoring these criminal activities and even banditry and
clashes between the farmers and herders.
“We use this opportunity to call on members of the
House of Representatives to prevail on some of these politicians, to really
look at national interest first before any political or sectional interest. We
have some strong evidence but we are still being conscious so that we don’t get
it wrong but the best is to advise these politicians.”
He urged politicians to desist from any activities
that would inflict pains on civilians, warning that all criminals would be
dealt with in accordance with the law of the land.
He assured his guests that the Army would continue
to pursue terrorists until they were finally exterminated from the nation.
Buratai equally assured Nigerians that the Army was
capable of fighting criminals including Boko Haram terrorists, kidnappers and
bandits across the country.

Remarkable Week for Premier League Teams as all English teams set to Feature in Major European Finals
Arsenal and Chelsea have qualified for the Europa
League final, making it a remarkable week for English football as the two major
European finals will now featuring Premier League teams.
The London clubs will face each other in Baku on 29 May while Liverpool will
take on Tottenham in the Champions League final in Madrid on 1 June.
Arsenal beat Valencia 4-2 to win their semi-final
tie 7-3 while Chelsea sealed their place in the final by beating Eintracht
Frankfurt 4-3 on penalties after the match finished 1-1 after extra time, with
the aggregate score 2-2.
It will be the first time in the history of European
football that one country has monopolized the two finals and means that both
trophies will head to England.
“Here the level is very high,” said Chelsea’s
Italian manager Maurizio Sarri. “If you think that, to get to the final of the
League Cup, we had to play against Liverpool, against Tottenham – the finalists
of the Champions League – and then we played against, in my opinion, the best
team in Europe in the final, Manchester City, you can understand the level here
is very high.
“At this moment, the Premier League is the best
championship in Europe and, as a consequence, in the world. But it’s not easy
for an English team to arrive in the last month in a very good condition,
physically, because here we play more than in the other countries.”
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored a hat-trick
for Arsenal, was asked what reaching the final meant to Arsenal. He said: “It
means a lot. I think we have learned from last season [when they were
eliminated in the semi-finals]. This year we didn’t make the same mistakes, so
now we are through to the final and we are all happy.”
